Early counting trends in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election show BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari taking the lead over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency. Adhikari, a former ally of Banerjee, had previously defeated her in Nandigram. The BJP is leading in 45 seats, while the Trinamool Congress is ahead in 31, with the Congress showing early leads in two constituencies.
The Election Commission of India has introduced changes in the counting process this time. Initially, only postal ballots will be counted for the first 30 minutes, followed by simultaneous counting of postal ballots and EVM votes. This adjustment aims to ensure a clear trend in the results by noon.
In the previous elections, the Trinamool Congress won 216 seats, with the BJP securing 77 seats. The Left Front and Congress are striving to increase their presence in the state Assembly this time. The two-phase Assembly polls in West Bengal witnessed a high voter turnout of nearly 93%.
