The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) unveiled its education budget for the financial year 2026-27, totaling Rs 4,248.08 crore, a rise from the previous year’s Rs 3,674 crore. This budget, presented by Dr. Avinash Dhakne, focuses on balancing daily operations and long-term infrastructure development. It allocates Rs 3,758.08 crore for revenue expenditure and Rs 490 crore for new school construction and upgrades.
Building on the ‘Mission SAMPURN’ success, BMC introduced ‘Mission SAFAL’ to integrate co-curricular activities into the academic framework, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani emphasized the importance of quality education for all children in Mumbai, bridging traditional learning with future skills through Mission SAFAL.
The budget emphasizes digital initiatives, including providing 19,317 tablets to Class 9 students and expanding astronomical labs in 40 schools. It allocates funds for cyber literacy training, musical instruments, CCTV installation, and modernizing school libraries. Additionally, students achieving above 90% in Class 10 will receive financial aid, and the free BEST bus travel scheme for students continues with ‘Chalo Cards’.
