In a significant development, Amit Kumar Mandal, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) from Katwa in the East Burdwan district, has gone missing after borrowing Rs 50 lakh. The police have informed the Election Commission about the investigation into his disappearance. Amit, responsible for booth number 23 of the Katwa Assembly constituency, has been missing for four days now.
His family reported him missing after he failed to return home following a meeting related to his BLO duties. Police investigations revealed that Amit had taken a loan of around Rs 50 lakh from a bank, invested it in the stock market, and incurred substantial losses. The Election Commission has initiated an investigation into the matter.
Amit, a teacher by profession, resides in the Bikihat area of Khajurdihi Panchayat in Katwa-I block. He was last seen on Tuesday morning, and his family grew concerned when he did not return home. Despite extensive searches, he remains missing. The family mentioned that Amit had been under mental stress due to his BLO responsibilities.
Notably, Amit Kumar Mandal is responsible for 641 voters in Booth No. 23 and had distributed notices to 33 voters for a hearing. His absence during the ongoing hearing sessions on the draft voters’ list in West Bengal has posed challenges for the administration. If he remains missing, a replacement will be appointed to complete his pending tasks.
