Matheus Cunha scored twice as Brazil bounced back from criticism after their draw with Morocco by securing a comfortable win over Haiti in Philadelphia. This victory propelled Brazil to the top of Group C on goal difference at the Philadelphia Stadium. Haiti, on the other hand, became the first team to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering their second consecutive defeat.
Brazil displayed a more cohesive and dynamic performance under Carlo Ancelotti, with Cunha’s movement and finishing standing out in the match. Cunha, in his first World Cup start, justified his selection over Brentford striker Igor Thiago with an impressive attacking display. He not only created space for teammates Vinicius Jr and Raphinha but also posed a constant threat in front of goal.
In the 23rd minute, Brazil took the lead in a stroke of luck. A clearance by Haiti’s Hannes Delcroix ricocheted off Cunha into the net after Vinicius Jr’s initial attempt was saved by goalkeeper Johny Placide. Cunha then extended Brazil’s lead just before halftime with a superb finish from the edge of the box, courtesy of an assist from Vinicius Jr.
Despite some resistance from Haiti in the second half, Brazil’s goalkeeper Alisson made a crucial save to deny Ricardo Ade’s headed effort from a corner. A late goal by teenager Endrick was disallowed for offside, but Brazil’s overall performance provided a confidence boost following the scrutiny they faced after the opening draw.
