A bulldozer was used to demolish an illegal factory in Kolkata’s Tiljala area following a fatal fire that claimed two lives. The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, and the demolition action started within 30 hours of the incident. The new BJP-led government in West Bengal received the initial report on the fire incident promptly.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared that the factory was operating unlawfully and ordered its demolition within a day. To ensure a smooth operation, police and central armed forces were deployed during the demolition process. The fire had erupted in a leather factory on the second floor of a building, leading to tragic consequences.
Following the incident, an inquiry committee was formed to investigate the matter. It was revealed that the factory had no building plan and lacked essential fire safety measures. The owner of the factory, Zafar Nishar, has been arrested in connection with the fire incident. The government has taken strict measures, including cutting off water lines to illegal and hazardous factories in Kolkata.
Bengal Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul mentioned that notices are being issued to buildings without proper fire licenses. Owners will be given a chance to rectify the situation; otherwise, further actions will be taken as directed by the Chief Minister.
