A bulldozer operation took place on Monday at a multi-storey building under construction in Kolkata by Trinamool Congress leader and real estate developer Raju Naskar, leading to unrest in the area. Angry individuals who had booked flats in the project reportedly confronted a close associate of Naskar, resulting in a physical altercation. Police and central forces intervened to restore order at the scene.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had issued notices regarding two multi-storey buildings associated with Raju Naskar, situated at 37 Barwaritla Road and 1-E East Kulia Road in Beleghata, north Kolkata. These buildings comprise a total of 16 flats, with the under-construction structure at 1-E East Kulia Road being demolished by the civic body. Panic spread among potential flat owners following the KMC’s actions, with some individuals visiting Naskar’s office on East Kulia Road.
Allegations surfaced that a man linked to Raju Naskar was collecting information for him, sparking a confrontation with project stakeholders. Concerns were raised about financial transactions without receiving necessary documentation, including agreement papers and building plans. The elderly and ailing landowners of the construction sites are reportedly struggling to navigate the situation.
Buyers expressed frustration over the lack of documentation despite substantial payments for the flats, with accusations of deceit emerging against Naskar’s associates. The closure of Naskar’s office post-KMC notices further fueled discontent among the affected parties. Local residents highlighted previous doubts raised by the civic body regarding the housing projects, which had faced construction halts under the Trinamool Congress government.
Apprehensive of losing their investments and promised flats, complainants sought recourse by filing complaints against Raju Naskar at the Beleghata police station.
