A bust of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder, Syama Prasad Mookerjee, was vandalized in Kolkata just before Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit for Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations. The police reported that the lower part of the altar where the bust was placed was found broken on Sukea Street in central Kolkata.
The bust, set up in preparation for the birth anniversary event, was supposed to be inaugurated by state BJP leaders. The name plaque had been installed on the altar, with the work completed on Saturday night. However, on Sunday morning, the damage was discovered.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, which occurred after midnight. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrators responsible for the vandalism.
The BJP has strongly denounced the act, with the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha filing a complaint at Amherst Police Station regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to arrive in Kolkata on Monday for the birth anniversary celebrations of Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
