Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul will lead a crucial meeting on Thursday regarding the release of the first supplementary list of voters marked for judicial review due to “logical discrepancies.” The upcoming supplementary list is set to be unveiled on Friday, with the meeting under Justice Paul’s guidance aimed at assessing the progress of the ongoing judicial review.
The meeting will be attended by 732 judicial officers engaged in the review process, including 100 from both Odisha and Jharkhand, along with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal and subordinate officials. An insider from the CEO’s office mentioned that the gathering will also address the law and order situation in West Bengal ahead of the supplementary list publication, anticipating potential unrest in various areas of the state.
Following the publication of the primary voters’ list in West Bengal on February 28, excluding 60 lakh cases for judicial review, periodic supplementary lists are planned based on the review progress. As of Wednesday night, the review process for 23.30 lakh voters out of the 60 lakh cases has been finalized, with eight lakh voters identified as eligible for exclusion, representing over 34% of the reviewed cases.
The upcoming West Bengal polls are scheduled for April 23 and April 29, divided into two phases covering 152 and 142 Assembly constituencies, respectively. Approximately 2,300 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel will be deployed for each phase, with 480 CAPF companies already positioned for area control.
