A Calcutta High Court single-judge bench has rejected Sumit Roy’s anticipatory bail plea. Roy, an executive assistant to Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, is facing charges of corruption and illegal land grabbing. The court has instructed Roy to provide details of his financial transactions by June 29 and ordered the state police to submit a comprehensive report on the case within the same timeframe.
An arrest warrant and lookout notice have been issued against Roy, who remained elusive. A recent joint operation by various police forces searched Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, Kolkata, in pursuit of Roy. Despite Roy’s counsel arguing his role as a mere employee, the court dismissed his bail plea after considering the prosecution’s evidence of fake seals and connections to a previously arrested legislator.
During the hearing, Roy’s counsel defended his client’s innocence, citing his subordinate position within the party. However, the state government counsel highlighted incriminating evidence linking Roy to the illegal activities. The bench ultimately ruled against granting Roy anticipatory bail, affirming the seriousness of the allegations.
