Calcutta High Court provided temporary protection to Paresh Ram Das, a Trinamool Congress MLA from Canning Paschim constituency, South 24 Parganas district. The court’s order prevents police action against Das until June 30. Simultaneously, the court directed the ongoing investigation against Das to continue, emphasizing his cooperation with the police for the probe. Allegations of land grabbing in Canning area have been made against the MLA.
The court noted multiple criminal cases against Das, mentioning that the FIRs were lodged after a recent political change in the state. Das argued that these cases were politically motivated. The High Court, after evaluating arguments from both sides, deemed the FIRs against Das to be in early stages, warranting no immediate decisions. In light of the situation, the court granted temporary relief to the MLA.
Following the BJP’s victory in West Bengal’s Assembly elections, a crackdown on illegal activities has ensued. The police, under the new government, have intensified efforts against criminal elements, including Trinamool Congress members facing legal accusations.
