A division bench of the Calcutta High Court has instructed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a new investigation into the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. The team, led by a Joint Director of the CBI, was appointed following demands from the victim’s family members, who sought a fresh probe.
Scheduled for June 24, the next hearing will require the CBI to present a progress report to the division bench. The case involves the tragic death of a female junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where she was found brutally murdered inside a seminar room on August 9, 2024.
Initially investigated by an SIT of Kolkata Police, the sole convict in the case, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, was arrested. Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation, identifying Roy as the sole accused in the rape and murder. Roy was convicted by a trial court and sentenced to life imprisonment, with the CBI later appealing for the death penalty.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the CBI’s handling of the case, the victim’s family members approached the Calcutta High Court for a fresh investigation, citing a lack of thoroughness in the probe. The court, after a recent change in the division bench overseeing the case, has now ordered a new investigation by the CBI.
