A single-judge vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court dismissed Abhishek Banerjee’s plea for expediting the hearing on his petition challenging CID summons related to a signature mismatch case involving Trinamool Congress MLAs. Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s general secretary and Lok Sabha member, sought protection from coercive police action, including arrest, in the matter. The court’s decision came after his counsel requested a fast-track hearing during the proceedings.
Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had approached the Calcutta High Court on June 3 to challenge the CID summons and seek legal protection. Initially summoned on June 1, he requested a 15-day extension citing health reasons following a public assault incident. However, the CID later issued a second notice for his appearance on June 8.
Notably, Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee are expected to be in New Delhi on June 8 for an opposition meeting. Recently, Abhishek Banerjee had submitted a letter to the West Bengal Assembly Speaker, nominating key opposition leaders, which led to a scrutiny of signatures by the CID. The investigation was initiated after two Trinamool Congress legislators highlighted signature discrepancies among party members.
