Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accompanied by his wife, Diana Fox Carney, arrived in Mumbai to kick off his first official visit to India. They were warmly received by Maharashtra’s Minister of Protocol and Marketing, Jaykumar Rawal. The visit is seen as a significant move to strengthen the ties between India and Canada.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the importance of Carney’s visit in enhancing the relationship between the two countries. The India-Canada partnership is based on shared democratic values and strong people-to-people connections. The visit aims to foster cooperation across various sectors.
Carney’s visit signifies the first official trip to India by a Canadian Prime Minister since relations were strained during the previous administration led by Justin Trudeau. The visit is expected to focus on diplomatic and economic engagement, with Carney scheduled to meet business leaders in Mumbai before heading to New Delhi for discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office announced that discussions between Carney and Modi will center on expanding the Canada-India relationship, with a focus on trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, talent, culture, and defense. Carney is also set to engage with business leaders to explore investment opportunities and foster partnerships between businesses in both nations.
