The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended an Assistant Commissioner from Delhi’s Food & Supply Department for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe related to ration card distribution. The accused, identified as Vinod Kumar, was stationed at the Asian Market office in Pushp Vihar.
A case was filed against the accused on May 20 by the CBI following accusations that he demanded Rs 100 per ration card for the allocation of 475 cards. It was proposed that approximately 120 cards be assigned to each nearby ration shop, including the complainant’s shop, resulting in an alleged demand of nearly Rs 12,000 from the complainant.
On May 21, the CBI conducted a sting operation after validating the complaint’s allegations. The accused official was caught red-handed during the operation, where he was demanding and receiving Rs 10,000 from the complainant. Subsequently, the CBI took the accused into custody promptly after the successful operation.
The case pertains to suspected corruption in the ration card distribution process managed by the Food & Supply Department in Delhi. The CBI is exploring whether similar demands were made to other ration shop owners during the allocation process. Additionally, investigators are expected to scrutinize official records and transactions associated with ration card distribution in the region.
Searches and a detailed review of documents linked to the accused are being conducted by the CBI as part of the ongoing investigation. Furthermore, the agency plans to interrogate other officials involved in the ration card allocation process to determine the potential extent of corruption.
