The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended the fifth suspect linked to the murder of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath. The arrested individual, identified as 40-year-old Vinay Rai alias Pumpum Rai, was captured in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, the main shooter, Rajkumar Singh, was arrested in Muzaffarnagar with the help of Uttar Pradesh Police.
CBI sources revealed that Rajkumar Singh, a resident of Chhapar, Uttar Pradesh, was identified as the shooter. A joint operation between the CBI and local police led to his arrest. Rajkumar Singh was nabbed near a toll plaza on the Haridwar-Delhi Highway as he attempted to flee. Three other suspects arrested in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have been remanded to police custody until May 24.
Rajkumar Singh’s name emerged during the interrogation of previously detained individuals. After obtaining transit remand, he was presented before a special CBI court in Kolkata. The investigation into Chandranath Rath’s murder, which occurred shortly after the West Bengal assembly election results, is ongoing. Rath, a former Indian Air Force member, was fatally shot in North 24-Parganas.
