The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) presented a new status report at a trial court in Sealdah, Kolkata, regarding the investigation into the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The victim’s parents expressed dissatisfaction with the slow progress of the probe into the alleged larger conspiracy behind the crime.
The victim’s parents’ counsel highlighted the delay in the investigation, noting that a year had passed since the sole convict, Sanjay Roy, was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the CBI had only submitted status reports without significant progress on the broader conspiracy aspect.
According to the latest status report, the CBI stated that since November of the previous year, they had recorded statements from 12 additional witnesses in the case. Alongside the report, the CBI also submitted the case diary to the trial court for review.
The junior doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on August 9, 2024, leading to the arrest of Sanjay Roy by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police. Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The trial court had sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment last year, but the CBI’s inquiry into the broader conspiracy remains ongoing. The case is under review in both the trial court and the Calcutta High Court.
