The case concerning the death of former Kannur ADM Naveen Babu, which sparked a political uproar in Kerala, has been handed over to the CBI. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting following the family’s request due to a lack of confidence in the ongoing police investigation. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved government employment for Naveen Babu’s daughter Niranjana under the dependent appointment scheme.
The recommendation for a CBI probe is significant as it marks the first such case under the new government. Given the withdrawal of general consent for CBI cases by the previous government, a specific recommendation from the state government was necessary for the Central agency to intervene. This move is expected to challenge the CPI(M) leadership, with the Opposition likely to escalate accusations of shielding CPI(M) leader P.P. Divya, the sole accused in the case so far.
Naveen Babu’s family had expressed serious concerns about the local police and special investigation team’s inquiry from the outset. They contended that only a CBI investigation could reveal the truth and ensure justice for Naveen Babu, who was found dead at his official residence in Kannur on October 15, 2024. The incident occurred following a public altercation with P.P. Divya, leading to widespread protests and Divya’s subsequent resignation.
The CBI’s investigation is anticipated to delve into the circumstances surrounding Naveen Babu’s death, including the events at the farewell function and the allegations made against him. It will also explore potential connections to the petrol pump controversy. While the government’s gesture of offering employment to Naveen Babu’s daughter is a compassionate move, the focus remains on whether the investigation will uncover all individuals responsible for the tragedy and hold them accountable.
