Central Intelligence Agencies Alert Tamil Nadu Police on Security Amid Political Uncertainty

Central intelligence agencies have alerted the Tamil Nadu Police to enhance security measures at key locations in the state due to escalating political uncertainty post the 2026 Assembly election results and government formation delay. There are concerns of potential law-and-order disturbances if the current political impasse persists, particularly after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader C. Joseph Vijay faced challenges in garnering the necessary support to establish the government. Security has been bolstered in Chennai and other sensitive districts as a precautionary step given the tense political environment.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has marked a significant juncture in the state’s political landscape, with the newly formed TVK emerging as the largest party by securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. Amid heightened political activities, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor R.V. Arlekar to formally claim the government formation. Despite submitting a list of 113 supporting MLAs, including 108 from TVK and five Congress members, Vijay was informed by Governor Arlekar that he needs backing from at least 118 MLAs to be invited for government formation.

The situation has created uncertainty regarding Vijay’s immediate path to Chief Ministership and has postponed the anticipated swearing-in ceremony. Initial expectations of support from parties like the PMK, Left parties, and the VCK have hit roadblocks, leaving TVK short of the majority mark. Speculations arose late Wednesday night suggesting that the AIADMK might explore government formation with external backing from the DMK if Vijay fails to secure a majority.

Political circles witnessed intense deliberations between senior leaders of both the DMK and AIADMK, with the DMK later stating its preference to stay in opposition in line with the public mandate. Actor Rajinikanth’s meeting with DMK president M.K. Stalin has further fueled political conjecture, although no official statements have been released regarding the discussions.
