The Mizoram Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister announced that the Centre has earmarked Rs 491 crore for the Tripura-Mizoram natural gas pipeline project. This project is part of the broader North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid, which has a total outlay of Rs 9,265 crore. The 119.5-km pipeline will connect Panisagar in northern Tripura to Aizawl, providing natural gas for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections mainly for cooking purposes.
The terminal station for this pipeline project will be located at Sihhmui, approximately 21 km from Aizawl. Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) is overseeing the project, with about 45% of the physical work already completed. The entire project is expected to be finished by December 2027. Once the pipeline reaches Sihhmui, Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) will start laying the local distribution network to offer PNG connections to households in Aizawl for cooking by early 2028.
TNGCL, a rapidly growing natural gas distribution company in Eastern India, was established in 1990 as a joint venture involving GAIL (India) Ltd, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, and Assam Gas Company Ltd. The company is known for providing eco-friendly and cost-effective natural gas to various sectors in West Tripura and Gomati districts. TNGCL has a strong track record of almost 100% reliability in gas supply and has been instrumental in promoting cleaner energy adoption in the region.
