The Centre has approved ten road and 16 bridge development projects in Assam, with a total funding of Rs 617.98 crore for roads and Rs 129.74 crore for bridges. These projects aim to boost regional connectivity, transportation efficiency, and reduce travel time in Assam. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the importance of these projects in promoting inclusive development and seamless connectivity, especially in strategic regions like the Northeast.
The road projects will focus on upgrading key stretches connecting districts, markets, and industrial areas, while the bridge projects aim to replace old structures and build new bridges for safer and uninterrupted movement, particularly in flood-prone areas. The Assam government has welcomed these approvals, anticipating significant benefits for local trade, smoother movement of goods and people, and support for agriculture, small businesses, and tourism.
Improved connectivity is expected to enhance access to essential services like healthcare and education in remote areas. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized infrastructure development as a crucial element of Assam’s growth strategy. These approvals align with the ‘PM Gati Shakti’ National Master Plan, focusing on integrated infrastructure planning for faster project execution across sectors and states.
The increased investments in Assam’s road infrastructure are part of the broader vision to strengthen connectivity in the Northeast and support India’s Act East policy. The newly sanctioned projects are set to improve logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and accelerate socio-economic development in Assam, contributing to the state’s overall growth trajectory.
