The Centre has confirmed the availability of urea in Punjab for the ongoing kharif agricultural season. Official data reveals that the Department of Fertilizers has maintained a surplus supply-chain to the state. Against a requirement of 14.50 lakh metric tonnes for Punjab, the Centre has ensured an availability of 10.71 LMT.
An additional quantity of 39,167 MT of Urea is in transit to Punjab. Ground-level verification shows that paddy transplantation is yet to fully begin in the state, indicating the current stocks are sufficient. In Amritsar district alone, a healthy 64,720 MT of Urea has been available in the Kharif 2026 season.
The strong stock position is a result of pre-positioning strategies by the Central Government. Between January 2026 and March 2026, the DoF supplied 6.08 LMT of urea to Punjab. Sales in the state between March 1, 2026, and June 9, 2026, saw a significant increase compared to the previous year.
The Department of Fertilizers ensured availability of 19.43 LMT of Urea in the Rabi 2025–26 season. Despite external challenges, the Central Government stabilized the fertilizer supply chain. The responsibility for retail distribution lies with State Governments to prevent localized issues.
To ensure subsidized Urea reaches farmers, the Central Government has conducted high-level reviews. Fertilizer companies are directed to remain responsive to emergent issues. Continuous monitoring by the Government aims to support the farming community for a successful Kharif 2026 season.
