The Department of Food and Public Distribution has sent show cause notices to major edible oil companies for failing to submit mandatory monthly production returns despite multiple reminders. Non-compliance with these requirements goes against orders under the Essential Commodities Act. The companies have been given seven days to provide written explanations to avoid potential actions like inspection and confiscation.
The regulatory oversight in the edible oil sector has been strengthened through the VOPPA Order, requiring registration of manufacturers, processors, and others on the NSWS and VOPPA portal. Monthly submission of production, stock, and availability details is now mandatory. This move aims to create a transparent, data-driven ecosystem for edible oils to enhance policy planning and national food security.
The amended order necessitates monthly reporting on various edible oil products, including crude and refined oils, to promote transparency and effective monitoring. The Department has conducted inspections to ensure compliance with the VOPPA framework, with plans for further drives in Haryana and Rajasthan in January 2026. Similar notices will be issued to non-compliant units to ensure uniform adherence to regulations.
Capacity-building initiatives, such as workshops on accurate data reporting and timely filing of returns, are being undertaken by the Department. A national workshop in Indore focused on NSWS registration and VOPPA portal usage, with more workshops planned in other states to enhance compliance.
