The Trinamool Congress-run Chandernagore Municipal Corporation (CMC) in West Bengal’s Hooghly district is facing dissolution as a majority of its councillors have resigned within the past 24 hours. With 31 out of 33 councilors from the Trinamool Congress and only two from the CPI(M) camp, the dissolution of the CMC seems imminent.
As of Saturday morning, 30 out of the 31 Trinamool Congress councillors have submitted their resignations, leading to the potential dissolution of the current board of the urban civic body. Among those who have resigned is the Mayor of CMC, Ram Chakraborty, with resignations starting on Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday morning.
The councillors sent their resignations via email to the CMC chairperson and commissioner, sparking concerns about the corporation’s operations and the provision of essential civic services to residents. Ram Chakraborty cited restrictions on financial autonomy by the state’s municipal affairs and urban development department as a reason for the resignations, expressing worries about the impact on civic amenities for citizens under CMC’s jurisdiction.
In the backdrop of the recent West Bengal assembly elections, where Trinamool Congress suffered setbacks, including the defeat of former Minister Indranil Sen in Hooghly, uncertainties loom over the Trinamool Congress councilors in the Chandernagore Municipal Corporation.
