Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara shared that he refrained from attempting modern attacking shots like the reverse sweep during his Test cricket career. Pujara expressed that such shots did not align with his batting approach and could have led to losing his wicket easily in the longer format of the game.
In a light-hearted conversation with former India head coach Ravi Shastri, Pujara discussed how attempting the reverse sweep earlier in his career would have been challenging. Shastri humorously remarked on Pujara’s potential reaction if asked to practice the shot in the past.
During the chat, Pujara and Shastri reminisced about India’s memorable victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Pujara played a pivotal role. Pujara’s resilience and ability to handle pressure were highlighted, particularly in the 2018–19 series in Australia, where he emerged as the highest run-scorer and played a crucial part in India’s historic Test series win on Australian soil.
Shastri commended Pujara’s contribution, likening India’s triumph in Australia to winning a World Cup. He emphasized the significance of Pujara’s steadfastness and described him as a key player who played a crucial role in India’s success in challenging tours.
Pujara, known for his defensive technique and patience, retired from international and first-class cricket in August 2025 after a successful career that saw him accumulate 7,195 Test runs in 103 matches at an average of 43.60.
