Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram held discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin regarding the ongoing tensions within the DMK–Congress alliance over seat-sharing for the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congress is reportedly pushing for over 40 Assembly constituencies, while the DMK has offered 25 seats, the same as in the previous elections, along with a Rajya Sabha berth.
Negotiations between the DMK and the Congress have hit a roadblock as both parties stand firm on their demands, leading to uncertainty and political debates in the state. The DMK is concerned that expanding the Congress quota could impact its electoral prospects in the upcoming crucial contest. This deadlock has caused unease within Congress ranks, with some members urging a reevaluation of the alliance strategy.
There are internal discussions within the Congress about potential alternative political options, including a tie-up with actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The DMK has reportedly given the Congress a deadline of March 3 to convey its final decision, failing which the DMK may proceed with independent electoral preparations. The DMK’s focus is on securing a strong majority independently to ensure political stability and enhance its position in Tamil Nadu politics for the long term.
