The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Surya Kant, is set to speak at a seminar titled ‘The Bench Beyond Retirement’ in Jaipur, focusing on the role of retired judges. Scheduled for Saturday, the event will also be attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister, Bhajanlal Sharma. In a unique judicial move, 39 judges, including Acting Chief Justice S.P. Sharma, will convene at the Rajasthan High Court’s Jaipur Bench during the CJI’s visit.
Legal experts view this as a historic moment for the state’s judiciary, as all judges will hold hearings simultaneously from Jaipur, a first for the Jaipur Bench. The High Court has revamped its structure to accommodate this, establishing four Larger Benches, six Division Benches, and fifteen Single Benches. Notably, this marks the first time in Rajasthan that four Larger Benches, each with more than two judges, will operate concurrently.
During his second visit to Jaipur in two months, CJI Surya Kant previously highlighted concerns about cybercrime during a cybersecurity conference. He revealed being a target of cybercriminals who created fake websites in his name. The CJI emphasized the need for digital safety and trust online, noting the cross-border nature of cybercrimes as exemplified by websites operated from Nigeria. He also emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence in enhancing access to justice while cautioning about the expanding scope of cyber offenses beyond financial fraud.
