Police in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, are facing scrutiny after a 19-year-old college student was stabbed 14 times by her jilted lover. The incident occurred near Madhav Club in Dawa Bazar while the victim, identified as Pooja alias Gungun, was on her way to work. The accused, 21-year-old Sunil Jaroliya, was arrested within three hours of the attack.
The victim had previously approached the police on June 15 with a molestation complaint against the accused. However, instead of filing a First Information Report (FIR), the local police reportedly mediated a compromise between the two individuals. Following the recent attack, the survivor revealed this information to senior police officers, leading to an investigation into the handling of her initial complaint.
CCTV footage captured the brief but brutal assault, lasting less than a minute, where the victim sustained multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to the hospital and later transferred to Patidar Hospital due to the critical nature of her injuries. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that the accused had been harassing the victim after their communication ceased.
The accused, while attempting to flee, suffered a leg fracture from a fall and is currently receiving medical treatment. He will undergo interrogation before being presented in court. The police revealed that the accused had developed a friendship with the victim on Instagram four years ago and was distressed by her recent lack of communication. Authorities are investigating the conduct of the police personnel involved in handling the initial complaint to determine if any negligence occurred.
