Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in fruitful talks with senior leaders and policymakers from Germany to enhance economic ties between India and Germany and promote the India-EU trade partnership. The discussions centered on improving the business environment, boosting investment flows, and strengthening collaboration in sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, mobility, and manufacturing. Both sides recognized the vast potential for expanding trade, driving innovation, and establishing resilient supply chains through closer cooperation and increased industry involvement.
In a separate meeting in March, Goyal met with Maros Sefcovic, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, during the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation in Cameroon. They assessed the progress of the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) and discussed key priorities under the conference agenda. The ongoing work towards finalizing the India-EU FTA, as announced by PM Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in January 2026 in New Delhi, was also reviewed.
The India-Germany agreement, one of the largest trade pacts ever signed, goes beyond a mere trade deal, fostering cooperation in crucial sectors such as artificial intelligence, defense, and semiconductors. This comprehensive partnership is expected to benefit all regions and citizens of India, promoting rules-based trade and policy stability to attract both domestic and foreign investments. The FTA is set to create numerous opportunities for small businesses, startups, and workers, particularly in labor-intensive sectors like textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, marine products, gems and jewelry, handicrafts, engineering goods, and automobiles.
