Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal assured the Lok Sabha that India’s farmers are safeguarded in the India-US trade deal, with agricultural and dairy products excluded from the agreement. Goyal emphasized that India has shielded crucial sectors like agriculture and dairy while addressing food and farming concerns in the trade pact. The partnership is expected to open up new avenues for MSMEs, skilled workers, and industries, bolster bilateral relations, and prioritize energy security for India’s 140 crore citizens.
Goyal highlighted that the trade deal will facilitate access to advanced technologies, supporting India’s initiatives like ‘Make in India for the World,’ ‘Design in India for the World,’ and ‘Innovate in India for the World.’ Despite disruptions caused by opposition MPs’ protests in the Lok Sabha, Goyal delivered his speech. The chaos led to the Lower House’s adjournment by the Speaker, halting proceedings.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to address the “Motion of Thanks to the President’s address” during the ongoing Budget Session, with discussions continuing in both Houses of Parliament. The motion follows President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses at the commencement of the Budget Session on January 28. Goyal previously credited PM Modi for finalizing the trade deal, resolving prolonged negotiations at official and ministerial levels.
Goyal stressed the importance of concluding the trade agreement, citing challenges faced by Indian exports of labor-intensive goods like seafood and textiles due to the Trump administration’s imposition of a 50% punitive tariff. Expressing gratitude on behalf of India’s population, Goyal lauded the deal for its potential to boost economic growth, particularly benefiting farmers, the underprivileged, fishermen, women, and youth. Goyal also criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of hindering India’s progress and aiming to regress the country’s development.
