The Competition Commission of India (CCI) handled 54 cases related to anti-competitive practices and antitrust issues in 2025. Additionally, the CCI managed 149 mergers and acquisitions filings during the same period. Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Harsh Malhotra, disclosed these statistics in response to a query in Lok Sabha.
In efforts to enhance operational efficiency and transparency, the Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023, introduced reforms aimed at expediting proceedings before the Commission. Notable changes include reducing the approval time for combinations from 210 days to 150 days and implementing a settlement and commitment framework for quicker resolution of competition cases.
Furthermore, the government took steps to implement recent competition law reforms by issuing various Rules and Regulations under the Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023. The Act also introduced a method for determining penalties based on the global turnover of the individual or enterprise involved.
The Green Channel route, established under the Act, streamlines the approval process for combinations by granting deemed approval upon filing with the CCI. This mechanism facilitates the swift resolution of competition cases. Minister Malhotra highlighted that a ‘Market Study on AI and Competition’ was conducted to assess key AI systems and markets, identifying concerns such as ecosystem lock-in, algorithmic collusion risks, and self-preferencing across the AI tech stack.
