A minority human rights organization in Bangladesh has expressed serious concerns about ongoing communal threats aimed at the Radha-Gobinda Temple in Gaibandha district. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council highlighted a video circulating on social media containing threats to attack the temple in Hansbari village, causing fear among local residents and minority communities nationwide. The organization emphasized the potential for communal violence that could harm the country’s reputation and social cohesion.
The Council has urged the government, administration, civil society, and political leaders to take immediate and effective actions to maintain communal harmony at both local and national levels. They have called for the prosecution and exemplary punishment of those responsible for spreading communal incitement and threats. Additionally, the organization emphasized the temple’s significance beyond religious purposes, including its role as an old-age home, medical center, and other public welfare facilities.
In a recent report titled “The Persecution Continues: Minority Communities Under Sustained Attack in Bangladesh,” the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities documented 505 incidents targeting minorities across various regions of the country. These incidents ranged from killings, assaults, and kidnappings to attacks on temples, land grabbing, and intimidation. The report highlighted a pattern of violence, sexual abuse, and institutional failures affecting minority communities nationwide.
The report criticized the authorities in Bangladesh for their failure to provide adequate protection, accountability, and justice for vulnerable minority groups. It pointed out delays in responses, weak investigations, and intimidation of victims or their families in many cases. The escalating violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, during the previous government’s tenure has raised concerns globally and within human rights organizations.
