Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to influence the Rajya Sabha election through “seat manipulation,” Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan highlighted that the controversy arose when the ruling party introduced a third candidate despite lacking the necessary numbers in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.
Natarajan, speaking at a press conference in Bhopal, criticized the BJP’s actions, stating that their move exposed a clear intent to undermine democratic processes. She emphasized that objections to her nomination were based on legal notices that had not been officially considered by any authority.
Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari supported Natarajan’s claims, asserting that the incident had tarnished the state’s democratic reputation and raised concerns about the fairness of the electoral system. He mentioned ongoing national discussions on issues like vote manipulation and the integrity of the electoral process.
In response to the allegations, senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya defended the party’s objection and the decision of the Returning Officer. Vijayvargiya accused the Congress of disrespecting constitutional institutions and politicizing a legal matter, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of democratic processes.
