The Congress strongly condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for using offensive language against party leaders, including National President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari expressed disapproval, stating that such language is unbecoming of a Chief Minister. Tiwari also criticized the police action taken against party spokesperson Pawan Khera, emphasizing that Khera’s statements were based on available records.
The controversy arose from Sarma’s remarks in Jorhat, Assam, where he criticized Kharge and Congress leaders, calling Kharge a ‘pagal’ (madman). Sarma’s comments drew strong opposition reactions for their derogatory nature. The Chief Minister also questioned Kharge’s identity and addressed allegations made by Khera regarding Sarma’s family. Sarma warned of legal action against Khera, suggesting that the issue might involve Rahul Gandhi as well.
The political tension between the BJP and Congress has heightened due to this exchange, especially with the upcoming Assembly polls on April 9. The Congress labeled Sarma’s comments as derogatory and unacceptable, further escalating the already strained relations between the two parties.
