Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the searches conducted by Assam Police at party leader Pawan Khera’s Delhi residence, calling it a “witch hunt” that indicates Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s anticipated defeat. The searches were initiated following allegations that Sarma’s wife possesses three passports, with the police visiting Khera’s residence in Delhi amidst the ongoing controversy.
Ramesh condemned the police action as an attempt to silence opposition voices, emphasizing that the deployment of a large police force to apprehend Khera for raising public interest questions reflects the Chief Minister’s unease and desperation. Assam Police reported being unable to locate Khera at his Delhi residence, prompting efforts to locate him as part of their investigation.
Chief Minister Sarma refuted the allegations regarding his wife’s foreign passports, stating that authorities from the countries mentioned had denied the claims. He dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his image ahead of the elections. Sarma vowed to address the matter legally and hold those responsible for spreading misinformation to account.
