After days of speculation and negotiations, the Congress high command seems close to deciding on Kerala’s next Chief Minister, as indicated by senior leader K. Muraleedharan. A crucial meeting is underway at Sonia Gandhi’s residence, with Rahul Gandhi also in attendance. The announcement on the Chief Minister is expected within a day, ending the prolonged uncertainty despite the UDF’s significant electoral victory.
In Delhi, Muraleedharan expressed confidence to reporters that a decision would be made soon, signaling a resolution to the deadlock. The delay in appointing the Chief Minister, despite the UDF’s strong performance in the elections, has been a cause of concern for the party. State Congress chief Sunny Joseph acknowledged that the uncertainty had overshadowed the alliance’s success.
The power struggle revolves around senior leaders K. C. Venugopal, V. D. Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala. Venugopal, with the support of over 50 Congress legislators, appears to have an advantage in the consultations. While Venugopal has the backing of Rahul Gandhi and the central leadership, Satheesan is favored by party workers and some of the public for his assertive role as Leader of the Opposition against the current government.
Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi are actively engaged in the decision-making process. The delay has raised concerns among alliance partners, prompting further discussions. Rahul Gandhi is set to consult with alliance leaders and veteran party leader A.K. Antony before announcing the new Chief Minister.
