Congress leader Hussain Dalwai expressed disapproval of the appointment of non-Muslim members to the Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board, questioning the move and raising concerns about similar representation in Hindu religious trusts.
The newly reconstituted Waqf Board in Madhya Pradesh includes non-Muslim members Manoj Malpani and Animesh Bhargava, appointed by the Mohan Yadav-led government. Sanwar Patel continues as the chairman, with other members such as Najma Heptulla, Atif Aqeel, and Faizan Khan.
Under the amended Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, at least two non-Muslim members are now required in State Waqf Boards, a departure from the previous practice of exclusively Muslim members. Dalwai criticized this move, questioning if similar inclusivity would be reciprocated in Hindu trusts.
Dalwai also shared thoughts on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), expressing openness to the idea but emphasizing the importance of public awareness and discussions prior to its implementation. He highlighted the need for equal treatment of women and urged for informed debates on the UCC.
