In a significant move before the Assam Assembly elections, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the party, causing a setback for the Congress in the state. Bordoloi, in a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, expressed sadness as he stepped down from all party positions. While the reasons for his resignation were not specified in the brief letter dated March 17, sources suggest internal dissent and changing political dynamics in Assam played a role.
Bordoloi, who also criticized the functioning of the Congress party and its state president Gaurav Gogoi in a recent letter to the leadership, is expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon. Reports indicate that he may be nominated as the BJP candidate from the Dispur Assembly constituency, a strategically important seat in the state capital region. His departure follows another blow to the Congress in Assam with the exit of former state party president Bhupen Borah, who joined the BJP.
The consecutive resignations of key leaders like Bordoloi and Borah have raised concerns within the Congress about its organizational stability and electoral prospects in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP has stated that if Bordoloi decides to switch sides, the BJP will welcome him and even consider offering him an Assembly ticket. Sarma emphasized the BJP’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Assam amid the evolving political landscape.
