The Congress party has chosen Neeraj Dangi, a current Rajya Sabha MP, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajasthan Rajya Sabha elections. Dangi, who is set to secure a second consecutive term, has the backing of 67 MLAs in the Rajasthan Assembly, making the party’s victory on one of the three seats highly likely.
The voting for the three Rajya Sabha seats in Rajasthan is scheduled for June 18, with the counting also taking place on the same day. The terms of Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, BJP MP Rajendra Gehlot, and Congress MP Neeraj Dangi are all due to end on June 21.
Neeraj Dangi, who previously contested Rajasthan Assembly elections unsuccessfully, has been elevated to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress in 2020 and has now been re-nominated. With a background in the Youth Congress, Dangi, who hails from a political family, has been actively involved in various organizational roles.
By re-nominating Dangi, the Congress aims to reinforce its support base among Dalits while ensuring internal political equilibrium within the party. This decision is seen as a strategic move ahead of imminent political challenges, sending both social and organizational messages.
Neeraj Dangi, known for his close association with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during his tenure in Parliament, is likely to face an uncontested re-election in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in Rajasthan. While the BJP has put forward two candidates, the Congress has announced only one, indicating a probable outcome where the BJP secures two seats and the Congress one.
