The All India Congress Committee (AICC) expressed concerns over the Congress-led Karnataka government’s demolition of unauthorized constructions in Bengaluru. AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal emphasized the need for more caution and sensitivity in such actions. Venugopal conveyed the AICC’s worries to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Venugopal stated that the demolition in Kogilu village should have been carried out with greater care and compassion, focusing on the human impact. Assurances were given by the Karnataka CM and Deputy CM to engage with affected families, address grievances, and provide rehabilitation and relief. The issue gained attention after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused Karnataka of adopting a ‘bulldozer model’ to evict Muslims in Bengaluru.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar refuted Vijayan’s claims, labeling them as politically motivated and urged against interference in state affairs. Shivakumar assured assistance to evicted individuals with valid documents and residency in Karnataka. He clarified that the government’s action was necessary due to unauthorized huts appearing overnight at a designated quarry site.
Shivakumar defended the clearance operation, stating it was done after consultations with local representatives and officials to address health hazards. He emphasized the importance of preventing illegal occupation of dangerous areas. The Deputy CM highlighted that eligible families were being aided under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme and denied the use of bulldozers in the eviction process.
