The Congress party reiterated its opposition to the Great Nicobar development project, citing environmental concerns. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, along with other members, signed a petition as part of the “Nicobar Matters” campaign led by Rahul Gandhi to protect biodiversity and the environment. Venugopal expressed alarm over the potential impact of the project, highlighting issues such as deforestation and displacement of tribal communities.
Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, criticized the BJP-led government’s plans for the island. He accused the government of endangering the rich forest resources by sanctioning the felling of numerous trees. In response to environmental apprehensions raised by critics, the Union Environment Ministry defended the Great Nicobar Island development project, emphasizing a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.
The proposed project aims to develop Great Nicobar into a strategic maritime and economic center, leveraging its proximity to the East–West shipping route. The government’s statement outlined key components of the project, including an international Container Transhipment Terminal, a greenfield International Airport, a power plant, and a new township. Emphasizing compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment regulations, the government highlighted the project’s focus on optimized land use and long-term regional benefits.
