The Congress expressed solidarity with party leader Pawan Khera following the Telangana High Court’s decision to provide him interim relief in a case filed by Assam Police over alleged defamatory remarks against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife. Khera was granted anticipatory bail for one week to seek regular bail in the concerned court. Congress MP Tariq Anwar criticized the Assam Police’s handling of the case against Khera, emphasizing the need for Election Commission intervention.

Welcoming the court’s ruling, Anwar highlighted the timing of the controversy just before Assam’s Assembly elections and questioned the Election Commission’s inaction. He stressed the importance of investigating the allegations against Sarma’s wife promptly. Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat accused the BJP of harassment and supported Khera’s stance, labeling him a hero for standing up against political pressure tactics.

Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain echoed support for Khera, underscoring the unanswered questions raised by the party and criticizing the BJP’s reliance on police actions to silence dissent. AICC in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh Alwar, upon arriving for the Congress Working Committee meeting, condemned the case against Khera as a reflection of Assam Chief Minister Sarma’s frustration. Alwar further accused the BJP-led government in Assam of failing to fulfill its electoral promises.
