The Congress secured victory in the Davanagere South Assembly segment in Karnataka by 5,708 votes, following a significant win in the Bagalkot bypoll earlier on the same day. The party attributes these victories to guarantee schemes implemented.
In Davanagere South, Congress candidate Samarth Mallikarjun garnered 69,578 votes after the completion of counting, with BJP’s Srinivasa T. Dasakariyappa receiving 63,870 votes. The Socialist Democratic Party of India’s Afsar Kodlipet managed 18,975 votes.
The bye-election in Davanagere South was held due to the passing of veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, with his grandson, Samarth Mallikarjun, contesting for the Congress and Srinivasa T. Dasakariyappa representing the BJP.
The results of the election were crucial for both the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar leading the battle for the Congress, while the BJP aimed for its first victory in the Davanagere South Assembly segment.
Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President, D.K. Shivakumar, attributed the wins to the party’s guarantee schemes, stating that the government’s response to people’s difficulties led to favorable results in the bye-elections.
