Dramatic events unfolded during the mayoral and deputy mayoral elections of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation on Friday. The Congress party, with the support of rebel BJP corporators, has taken control of the Municipal Corporation. Narayan Chaudhary, a BJP rebel, was elected Mayor, while Tariq Momin of the Congress secured the Deputy Mayor’s position.
The official announcement of their victory was made by the Presiding Officer and Thane District Collector, Shrikrishna Panchal. In the mayoral race, Narayan Chaudhary received 48 votes, Vilas Patil from Konark Vikas Aghadi got 25 votes, and Sneha Mehul Patil, the official BJP candidate, garnered only 16 votes.
The election for the Deputy Mayor’s post witnessed a three-way contest. Tariq Momin of the Congress emerged victorious with 43 votes, followed by Javed Dalvi from the Shiv Sena-Shinde Faction with 25 votes, and Suhas Nakate of the BJP with 21 votes. The Congress has once again demonstrated its influence in Bhiwandi with this win.
Shinde’s Shiv Sena withdrew its candidates to support Vilas R. Patil, but this move failed to prevent Narayan Chaudhary’s victory. Six BJP corporators broke ranks to support Chaudhary, aligning with the Congress and the NCP to secure his win. The mayoral race turned into a three-way competition, ultimately leading to Chaudhary’s success.
Earlier, multiple candidates had filed nominations, including Mayuresh Vilas Patil, Pratibha Patil, Javed Dalvi, and Tariq Momin. The election day saw shifting alliances, disqualifications, and unexpected absences, reshaping the power dynamics within the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation.
