The controversial statue situated outside Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area was taken down on Saturday as per the state Sports Department’s instructions. State Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik had earlier declared the demolition of the structure near the VVIP gate of the stadium. The removal process commenced on Saturday morning and swiftly concluded thereafter.
The statue was erected in 2017 during the renovation of the Yuva Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake before the FIFA U-17 World Cup held in India that year. The structure, depicting the Biswa Bangla logo from the feet to the waist, was reportedly crafted by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The unveiling of the installation sparked controversy, with numerous football enthusiasts and social media users criticizing its odd and unattractive appearance.
Many football fans and social media users raised concerns about the artistic interpretation and significance of the structure. Following a change in government, Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik attended the Mohun Bagan-East Bengal derby at Yuva Bharati on May 17. Post-match, Pramanik expressed disapproval of the statue, labeling it as “strange and bizarre,” and linked it to alleged misfortunes of the previous government.
Pramanik conveyed to the Public Works Department the decision to eliminate the structure, which was executed on Saturday morning, leaving only two boots and a football at the site. Speculation suggests a new statue of a footballer might replace the previous installation. Pramanik had earlier mentioned during the derby that a meaningful statue of a renowned footballer would occupy the site.
