A controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district following the unearthing of a significant number of British-era silver coins during house foundation excavation in the Futera Ward area. The discovery, made at the ancestral home of Alok Soni, a government school teacher, has raised suspicions of concealment, attracting attention from locals and authorities. The coins, dating back to the British colonial period between 1815 and 1915, were found in an earthen pot while laborers were digging for foundation pillars.

The Department of Archaeology has authenticated the coins’ historical period and confirmed the recovery of 42 silver coins from the site. However, tensions escalated when a laborer alleged that a larger quantity of coins, weighing approximately 30 to 35 kilograms, was actually recovered during the excavation. The laborer, identified as Patel, claimed that after the discovery, each worker was paid Rs 500 and instructed to leave, insinuating that a significant portion of the coins was not surrendered to the authorities.

Alok Soni refuted the allegations, stating that every coin found was promptly handed over to the administration. He countered by suggesting that some laborers might have concealed a portion of the recovered coins themselves. In response to the incident, a police team, accompanied by revenue officials, arrived at the scene and halted construction activity, placing the area under administrative supervision for further investigation.

Police have initiated a case and are conducting a thorough inquiry to determine the exact number of coins recovered and to ascertain if any were deliberately hidden. The news of the discovery spread quickly, drawing large crowds to the site, with locals engaging in discussions about the historical and monetary significance of the find. While discoveries of British-era coins are not uncommon in Madhya Pradesh, this particular case has garnered attention due to conflicting claims surrounding the recovery process.

The Archaeology Department is set to conduct a detailed examination of the seized coins, urging calm and advising against the spread of rumors. The ongoing investigation will shed light on whether the incident was a mere accidental discovery or involved the concealment of valuable antiquities. This event underscores the importance of adhering to Indian treasure trove laws in reporting historical finds.
