The reinstatement of all seven engineers, including two Chief Engineers, involved in the Bhopal 90-degree overbridge controversy has reignited discussions. They have been assigned to the Engineer-in-Chief’s office following the decision approved by Public Works Department Minister Rakesh Singh.
While the engineers have resumed their duties, an ongoing departmental inquiry is yet to conclude, with officials emphasizing that appropriate action will follow. The Ashbagh railway overbridge, costing Rs 18 crore and completed in June 2025, faced closure due to safety concerns arising from its sharp turn.
The suspension of the engineers last year after the bridge’s unusual design drew ridicule on social media and international attention has been a subject of debate. Despite denying wrongdoing, the engineers were reinstated without penalties, prompting criticism on the decision’s timing amid the pending inquiry.
The incident underscores planning and oversight deficiencies within the department, pressuring the government to ensure accountability. After months of closure, the bridge is now slated for rectification following an agreement between the Public Works Department and Railways in April. Technical modifications to alter the bridge’s curvature are set to commence soon.
