In a key political move amidst uncertainty in Tamil Nadu’s government formation, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has officially offered unconditional support to actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The support was communicated through a letter presented to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar by CPI Legislature Party leader T. Ramachandran. This decision, backed by the CPI state leadership and voters’ mandate from the recent elections, aims to establish a stable and people-centric government in the state.
The CPI Legislature Party, consisting of two members, has pledged its unwavering support to TVK and its leader, C. Joseph Vijay, to facilitate the state’s next government formation. Emphasizing the need for a democratic and stable administration, the party has urged the Governor to acknowledge the support and proceed with the constitutional procedures for government setup. This development holds significance as Tamil Nadu grapples with negotiations and realignments post the split verdict in the Assembly polls.
Following the election results on May 4, where TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member House, the party emerged as the largest single entity. Earlier, the Congress had also extended its support to Vijay’s party, collectively amassing 112 seats. With the CPI’s backing, which was part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, Vijay’s faction inches closer to the majority mark of 118 seats required for government formation. This move is anticipated to prompt other minor parties and independent candidates to clarify their stance in the evolving political scenario.
Political analysts suggest that this recent development may intensify pressure on other political entities to disclose their positions amidst the swiftly changing landscape. Meanwhile, the Governor is anticipated to engage in further consultations with various parties before making a final decision on inviting any group to form the government in the state.
