The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala has responded to veteran leader G. Sudhakaran’s decision to contest the Assembly election as an independent candidate from Ambalappuzha. The party expressed disappointment over Sudhakaran’s move, highlighting the respect and opportunities given to him within the organization. Despite efforts to persuade him to reconsider, Sudhakaran seems determined to pursue an independent path.
The party’s general secretary, M.A. Baby, and state minister Saji Cherian have both expressed regret over Sudhakaran’s decision. While acknowledging his right to contest independently, they believe it will not significantly impact the party’s stronghold in Alappuzha. Sudhakaran’s hometown has seen posters criticizing his choice, indicating a potential grassroots campaign against him.
Sudhakaran’s decision has brought about a shift in the political landscape of Ambalappuzha, traditionally a CPI(M) stronghold. The party, however, remains confident in its ideological support among voters in the constituency. Despite the internal challenges and factional battles in the past, the CPI(M) aims to maintain its organizational strength in Alappuzha.
