Cyprus reaffirmed its support for India in combating cross-border terrorism during President Nikos Christodoulides’ recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The strong alignment between the two countries, especially on security issues, is attributed to concerns regarding Pakistan’s behavior. Last year, when PM Modi visited Cyprus, Christodoulides guided him along the ceasefire line in Nicosia, emphasizing the visible signs of Turkish occupation.
The visit was significant amid India’s tensions with Turkey over the latter’s support for Pakistan. Disputes over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey’s recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have been ongoing sources of friction. The Joint Declaration signed later signaled a new chapter in bilateral relations, not only between India and Cyprus but also at the European and international levels.
Cyprus, seen as a reliable ally of India in the Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East regions, plays a crucial role as an EU Member State facilitating India’s access to Europe. Christodoulides highlighted the strategic importance of Cyprus and its upcoming EU Presidency in strengthening India’s ties with the EU. The leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms during their recent meeting, emphasizing the need for multilateral efforts to combat terrorism globally.
Cyprus acknowledges Pakistan’s lack of support for its territorial integrity under the UN Charter, contrasting with its strong partnership with India based on shared principles of multilateralism. Despite the challenges posed by Pakistan’s stance, Cyprus remains committed to advancing a positive agenda with India. Both countries recognize the transformative potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor in enhancing global trade and connectivity.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to promoting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East, emphasizing the importance of deeper engagement and connectivity from India to Europe through the Middle East. They discussed establishing a Bilateral Connectivity Dialogue to enhance cooperation. Cyprus and India aim to be strategic partners connecting Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Indo-Pacific, working together to advance peace, stability, and prosperity.
