Dang district in Gujarat has become the top strawberry-producing region in the state, with cultivation expanding steadily due to the natural farming initiative. Farmers in the district are earning up to Rs eight lakh per hectare annually from growing strawberries. The area under strawberry cultivation has increased from 20 hectares in 2022-23 to around 33 hectares in 2025-26.
Production of strawberries in Dang has seen a significant rise, from 140 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 196 metric tonnes in 2024-25. It is projected to reach 233 metric tonnes by 2025-26. The growth is attributed to favorable climatic conditions, rising market demand, and the adoption of natural farming practices in the tribal district.
Strawberries thrive in Dang’s cool climate and organic-rich sandy and loamy soil. The crop requires well-drained soil with specific pH levels and sunlight exposure for flowering and fruit development. Farmers in the district are cultivating nine different strawberry varieties, with Winter Dawn being the most preferred due to its high yield.
Large-scale strawberry cultivation is taking place in various villages in Ahwa and Waghai talukas. The state government is actively promoting natural farming and modern cultivation methods through training camps and subsidies for farmers. Many farmers have shifted to strawberry cultivation from traditional crops, significantly increasing their annual income.
